Commonwealth Scholarship for PG/Ph.D: Apply by September 16

 

The British Council has invited applications from eligible candidates for the award of Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowships (CSFP) for 2017, tenable in the United Kingdom & for Master& Doctoral degree programme, commencing in September/October 2017.

The CSFP is aimed at students of Commonwealth countries who can make a significant contribution to their home country after the completion of a higher education programme in the UK. The CSFP is an annual scheme made available to all the Commonwealth countries by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission.   

In India, this is jointly managed by

(i) Commonwealth Scholarships Commission
(ii) the British Council
(iii) Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and
(iv) Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

This is a source of funding made available to all Commonwealth countries by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission.   

The level of courses are
(i) Taught Master’s Course (one year) (Note: Master Degree programs which are less than 2 years in duration, are not equivalent to Master Degree in India.)
(ii) Doctoral degree (up to three/four years & duration) (Note: CSC would fund only few candidates for 4-year PhD programme. The candidates are advised to choose at least one 3-year PhD option also).   

Scholarship Applications are invited in the following subjects:

(a) Engineering and Technology:

(i) Electronics / Electrical
(ii) Environmental Studies
(iii)   Remote Sensing Technology
(iv) Communication Engineering
(v)Biotechnology or Biochemical Engineering
(vi) Robotics
(vii) Computer Applications /Computer Science
(viii) Aerospace Engineering /Aeronautics
(ix) Civil Engineering/Architecture
(x) Material Science
(xi) Mining Engineering and
(xii) Marine Engineering
 
(b) Science (Pure and Applied)

(i) Mathematics
(ii) Molecular Biology
(iii) Physics
(iv) Chemistry (including Pharmaceutical/Medicinal Chemistry).
 
(c) Agriculture

(i) Agronomy & Forestry

(d) Humanities and Social Sciences

(i) History
(ii) Sociology
(iii) Management Studies
(iv) Economics
(v) Philosophy
(vi) Psychology
(vii) Law
(viii) English (Literature/Linguistics)
(ix) Political Science with International Relations

A person may apply either for Taught Master’s course or PhD degree, and also only in one subject. Application in more than one subject and one course will lead to disqualification of the candidature.

Applicant should be an Indian national with age not exceeding 40 years as on 16.09.2016.

For Master’s course, applicant should have completed or should be expecting to complete the Bachelor Degree by October, 2017 in the subject field concerned. Applicant should have scored 60% or above marks for Humanities and Social Science group and 65% or above marks for Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture groups.   

For PhD degree, applicant should have completed or should be expecting to complete the certificate of Master Degree by October 2017 in the concerned subject field. Minimum eligibility is 60% or above marks for Humanities and Social Science group and 65% or above marks for the relevant subjects in Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture groups.   

A maximum of 65 candidates would be nominated for this scholarship, which includes 26 nominations for PhD. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) would make the final selection from the nominated candidates. About 25 to 30 candidates would be finally awarded the scholarship.

Application: Those interested should apply online at Ministry of Human Resource Development portal by 3 pm on 16.09.2016 and as well as at Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s Electronic Application System (EAS) by 15.11.2016. It is mandatory for the applicant to apply on both the portals by the due dates. The applicants who do not apply on both the portals would not be called for the interview.   

Online Application to Ministry of Human Resource Development can be made at http://proposal.sakshat.ac.in/scholarship/ till 3 pm on 16.09.2016 and that to Commonwealth Scholarship Commission& Electronic Application System (EAS), at http://bit.ly/cscuk-scholarshipsdeveloping-cw or (for direct application) by 15.11.2016.   

Those who have already been abroad for studies / training / specialization either on scholarships or on their own, for a period exceeding six months are eligible to apply if they have been in India for at least two consecutive years as on 16.09.2016 after returning from abroad. Applications of candidates who are staying abroad will not be considered.   

Applicants are required to give preference for three institutions of study on their application form. The final decision on the host institution will be made by the CSC.
